What Kind of Wood Can I Use to Wood Carve?

What kind of wood can U carve?
In this post  we will cover the different types of wood you can use to carve.

There are many types of wood that carve easily and others that you may need different tools for because of the hardness or density of the wood.

Many of these you may be lucky enough to have in your backyard depending on your location.
Other woods you may have to purchase if you want to use them in your woodcarving projects.

Take a look at the videos below for some quick examples of carving woods and ideas for things to carve. Also you can check out my other site at www.whittlingwoodspirits.com for more ideas.
I will be adding resources with links as I build this blog as to where you can purchase many of these woods you can use to carve.

Check out the videos below for ideas on what wood to use.

What tools do I need to start woodcarving?

What tools do I need to start woodcarving?

The first thing you need to know when you are looking to start woodcarving is what kind of tools are you going to need?  It took me years to figure out what tools people were using to make the wonderful carvings I was seeing online. And I wanted to do the same .
But where would I start?  What tool should I purchase first? Where could I get what I needed?
I found that most department and hardware stores didn't have the carving tools in stock that I needed.
So here we will cover those basics as much as we can .

Number 1- Detail Knife

You are going to need a good quality carving knife. It doesn't have to be super expensive but it should be of pretty good quality and very sharp.

I recommend a flexcut detail knife because the quality and price is great for beginners.

You can purchase a detail knife by Clicking Here:

Watch the video on how to use a detail knife below.

Number 2 - Gouges

 Next you'll need some gouges.
Gouges make deeper rounded grooves and are used to carve out larger amounts of wood. A must have if you're going to get serious about  carving wood spirits.
You can pick up a set here.

Number 3- Vtool

The next tool every carver should have is a good Vtool

A Vtool  makes grooves with a v shaped cut (hence the name) and is a very important tool to all woodcarvers.
You can pick one up at any carving store or go to my link here and grab one in any of the  flexcut sets.http://astore.amazon.com/stixandstonwo-20

Number 4- Viener
Another useful and basic carving tool is a viener.
